Bal Mithai - A traditional sweet from Uttarakhand

It is believed that the sweet was invented in between the 7th and 8th centuries. Though it was created in Nepal but gained popularity only after its arrival in Almora. As per history experts this sweet was offered to god Sun as Prasad especially at the Katarmal’s Sun temple of Almora. With the passing of time it became a sweet for regular consumption.

Bal mithai, can be mistaken as a western dessert due its look of deep chocolate base with sugar coated balls. However this exotic sweet is purely made of khoya with a topping of poppy seeds. The sweet has a long shelf life and has a good amount of calcium and protein due to khoya.

The sweet has undergone an interesting journey of makeover. It is said that Lala Joga Ram Shah of Lal Bazaar, from Almora executed the present recipe of the sweet in which a slow cooking khoya and giving a rectangular shape. Finally coating this sweet with poppy seeds. Later on the Khim Singh and Mohan Singh brothers, commonly known as Rautela brothers sold it in a shop at the KMOU Bus Station on Mall Road.

Today this exotic sweet is the ambassador of Kumaoni culture and is also gifted in festivals, weddings, and special occasions. It is enjoyed all over the country.
